So, not trusting Time Machine anymore I've decided to use ChronoSync to
backup my Home directory to the external drive that should have been
for TM. I've used ChronoSync for years, but just to sync a laptop with
a desktop.
I've set up ChronoSync to copy one way from my MacBook Pro to an
external drive. It's set up to:
Synchronise Deletions (move deleted items to an archive on the external
disk)
Archive changed files on the external disk
Keep a least the 10 latest copies of any files in Archive folders
Purge archived files older than 500 days
So If I continue to sync the laptop and desktop, and do a one way sync
from the laptop to the external drive in work, I'll have 3 copies of my
data, with copies in a least 2 locations.
ChronoSync was $30 well spent I think.

That's pretty much what I do already, over a network (to a desperately
slow LaCie Ethernet Disk mini).

Has it ever done anything weird?

I tried it, and it kept falling over, so I sent it back.

Frequently.
It won't connect to a time server, so it forgets the time and date, and
as a result occasionally files all end up with the wrong timestamp. This
has caused Chronosynch to decide that it has to to copy over 180GB of
files, all over again.
Sometimes, its AFS configuration becomes corrupt, causing it to wreck
the shares it is suposed to be looking after. This has happened often
enough that I have worked out a way of recovering from the problem
without recopying everything.
There are a few other odd little irritations, but I can't tell whether
they're the fault of the device or of Mac OS X's dreadful local
networking/file-sharing reliability.

It wears Daniele's clothes when he's not around. Is that weird?

No 3G. Fewer megapixels than an N95. Lame.

Thanks for that - I can't believe I've been using ChronoSync for so long
without realising that it will do incremental backups by archiving
deletions _and_ changes. All those hours wasted with bash scripts...
It's very reassuring having incremental backups buzzing away every hour
when you've taken a week 'off work' to ... work at home.
(Still can't believe that the water board chose this week to replace the
water main outside my flat though).

A week?
The B******s took 8 weeks to replace the main in our road (4 weeks
blocking off one half then 4 weeks for the other) and there are only 12
houses in it.

Yes I use it for my home HD backups too. So far so good over the last
few months I've used it.
