One good thing at least about 10.5's Finder

From <http://www.macworld.com/2007/10/firstlooks/leodraft/index.php?pf=1>

"Unix AutoFS

Why give up such a high draft pick for this seemingly obscure technology
related to networked volumes? Because AutoFS in OS X 10.5 is, quite simply,
a revolution. AutoFS is responsible for the mounting and dismounting of
network shares, and in Leopard, it will uses separate .threads. for these
tasks. What does that mean in English? It means the end of the spinning
rainbow of doom you see when you, for instance, click on a network share in
the Finder, only to remember that you put the shared computer to sleep
earlier."

AT LAST!

It always annoyed me that 10.4 _still_ didn't have a properly threaded
Finder.

Same here to be honest, but I'm still holding out until I hear how it
performs on 1Ghz-ish G4s.

Besides - my G4 Powerbook had the two-finger-scrolling enabled via a 3rd
party util and I'm damned if I'm losing that.

We'll see in due time if that can be Leo-ed too,

What are Apple's dictates, and where can I read them?

From <http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/> :

Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster)
processor

512MB of memory
DVD drive for installation
9GB of available disk space
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may
apply.

There are some additional requirements for certain features (iChat,
Front Row, DVD Player, etc)

I guess (and hope) that this is just a recommendation,
without the installer enforcing it.
(like for example the 512 MB RAM for Tiger)

We'll see,

will need to be that, fairly sure i've read that it does check enforce.

though installing it on a drive and then fitting the drive would be okay
i would guess.

Unless it does an on-boot system check. In which case it probably just
flashes "nice try" and shuts down.

Well, I have an 800MHz powerbook laying around here someplace, so I could
try it

Yep. Although I'm serious when I think it'll do a check-on-boot.

Why would Apple want to do such a thing?
It would make them very unpopular with some users.
(as with the outcry over the next to last G4 towers
being made OS X bootable only, just to force obsolescense)

The point of such a speed limit should be: "OK, do it if you insist,
but don't cry with us about it being sluggish."

Anyway, this lack of clarity doesn't always work to their advantage.
I do want to keep the old cube alive,
and I hate minding different systems,
so I won't touch Leo until this issue has been cleared up.

You can install it on under-spec G4s by using FTM or install onto an HD
that you then put into the G4.
