No nothing like that. I haven't restarted for a while, I installed the
Missing sync today which required a restart, that's when the problem
occiurred. i have uninstalled the missing sync's statup items but it
still doesn't get pat the BSOD.

How long did you wait? sometimes it can take a while if any caches have
been cleared.

Could be worth a go, unless you've got fans racing away of course, then
it is likely to have crashed. I've sometimes waited a few minutes on my
G5 after some updates, subsequent updates are faster. It also happens
after I run Applejack and clear the caches.

OK, I left it for 20 mins, came back and it had got through to the log
in screen. I logged in and all seemed fine except no log in items were
running as i'd deleted them all. So, to check, I restarted and waited to
see what happened. I got the  BSOD and 20 mins later it was still there,
just a blue creen.

I've now logged back in in safe mode and the fans are still racing. I'm
totally confused now.

OK, I think it's fair to say you have a problem!

Try running console and have a look in the Crash Logs to see if they
might offer any clues.

I'd also check for any possibly faulty USB devices too, my EyeTV died
recently, and caused all sorts of problems.

It could be a bit of a process, but usually it's a matter of
ellimination. Try removing anything recently installed - did Missing
Sync have a proper uninstaller?, or did you just try to remove the files
manually?

It's also worth having a look back a few days. I can install an Unsanity
product, and about 2 days later things start to crash with the APE
referred in the crash logs.

Andy

Thanks for the help.

Yes,I uninstalled Missing sync using their uninstaller. I can't think of
anythin else I've updated recently. However, I have just moved all of
the pref panes into the disabled folder and restarted and it seems fine,
so there's obviously a problem with one of them. I guess this weekend I
need to start adding them back and see how far I get. OS9 used to have a
neat app that did this for you, I forget the name.

Might be worth installing something like Applejack, which you run in
single user mode (hold down Command-S at startup). This will run a
serious of tests/repairs (they are just standard Unix stuff), like Disk
Repair (fsck), repair permissions, and clear caches, as well as check
Preference files.

I too used to have such software on OS9 too, and also can't remember the
name. There was (is) Extensions Manager, but that didn't do any self
diagnosis.

Good hunting :-)

Conflict Catcher IIRC

Yes, that was one, Cassady and Greene wasn't it?

I used another one myself, but can't remember what it was called.
Although it didn't do error checking, it did make finding them easy
enough.

Coincidentally, my boss's Missing Sync (v3) beachballed today.
Sleeping the MacBook worked fine, but it never woke up past the
blue-screen-with-cursor stage.

Missing Sync is a bag of cock. I wonder of v4 is any less buggy when
not used on the newly-supported WM6 phone?
