G4 with OS 9.1. Trying to update the software to 9.2.1.

In the system profiler, the CDR is recognized but no matter what
I load, no media is recognized. (No Media Inserted msg on Profiler).
Doesn't matter what type. Music CD - nope. CD from Apple - nope,
CD from any other vendor (e.g. Intuit) - nope.

Went into Extensions and made sure that all the CD-related items
are turned on and active, rebooted, same problem.

any suggestions?

sounds like the cd drive itself may be failing.  try testing with a
different cd drive.

Exactly correct! I pulled one of the CDRs from another box, works
great! Off to return the defective one...
