I am contemplating using Darwinports and I see that it has Perl 5.8.7 in
the ports. Has anyone used this for their version of Perl on OSX? Did
you experience any problems?

I do and have no problem here.
However I don't use all modules and don't know if the modules you want
will work...
Just be sure which perl you execute since the default will stay the
macosx installed version . You can change the link however to the
darwinports version. Just don't throw the original perl version away
since it is needed by MacosX ( I've read this but never checked)

Thanks...I have the Darwinports path "/opt/local/bin" before the
"/usr/bin" so that wouldn't be a problem.

Something to think about...
