Slightly off-topic I know, but ... there was discussion recently of
ways to get FTP servers to mount as volumes on OS X, but I can't find
it now -- can anyone point me at the right tool?

Finder. Select "Go/Connect to Server", and enter an ftp:// URL in the
"Server Address" box.

Hmm. That wasn't it, that's the funny thing. Although it works of
course! How weird I never knew I could do that...

Hmmm... "apropos ftp" lists a mount_ftp command, although I've never
used that one myself. Might that be it?

I think this is what you were looking for:

I just tried the "Finder. Select "Go/Connect to Server", and enter an
ftp:// URL in the "Server Address" box" that Sherm mentioned and it
"Lost Connection to the Server" and didn't save a thing after trying to
copy 2405 files, I think I'll stick to Interarchy for awhile....
Still, I learn something almost every time Sherm post a message here.
Thanks Sherm!

I agree with Bill - Finder ranks pretty low on my list of preferred FTP
clients. Dead last, in fact... I probably should have mentioned that,
instead of just answering the question literally.
My fave on MacOS 9 was Fetch. Nowadays I use ncftp from a terminal.

Hi Everyone,
I kind of remember trying this, it sort of worked, ie, it made the
connection
but it was slow and unusable and the little wheel would just keep
spinning until
I killed the job.
Joe.
