The latest release of ShuX, 3.0.beta2, is available for download at:
download>
What is ShuX?
ShuX is a Cocoa-based Mac OS X update to the MacPerl Shuck tool.
Naturally, if you've never used MacPerl or Shuck, that's not
extraordinarily helpful to know. :-)
ShuX (and Shuck) is a POD reader. POD is Perl's "plain old
documentation" format. All of the documentation that ships with Perl -
and there is a LOT of it - is delivered in POD format. The docs for a
module are written in POD format, and embedded within the module's .pm
file.
What's new in beta2?
Two major crashing bugs have been fixed:
Running ShuX from a location with a space in the path name no longer
causes a crash.
Adding a DocSet by running a perl to get its configuration info
will no
longer cause a crash if the target perl hasn't been configured with
one
of the requested paths.
A number of things have been added and/or changed:
An "Introduction to ShuX" document is displayed at startup by
default.
An interface to type a full or partial POD name to select it in the
browser has been added.
The interface for selecting a perl to use when adding a new DocSet
has been overhauled.
Several new options have been added to the Preferences panel.
The menus have been cleaned up, with several menu items that aren't
relevant to a read-only document viewer removed.
Some minor display glitches have been corrected.
What new additions are planned for the beta3 release?
A "shux" command-line tool, written and contributed by Alex
Robinson.
Active hyperlinks in document windows.
A "history" function in the Browser window.
An "Open POD" item in the Services menu.

Naturally, I didn't notice the typo until three seconds after I sent
this to a fistful of lists. :-(
The correct URL is:
download>

The new perl... button works much better. One new problem though:
If any field in a Document Set is left blank, that top-level node
in the DocSet Browser becomes a file system browser anchored at '/'!
I think it would be better if the top-level entries either did nothing
or (my preference) removed from the browser entirely if not set.

When I go to /usr directory, everything's greyed out, so I can't
navigate the path to the installed perl.

D'oh! The filter at the bottom is applied to both directories *and*
files, but it should apply only to files.
Easy workaround: Choosing "All files" will let you select
subdirectories. Or, you can hit cmd-shift-G and enter the full name of
the directory you want to navigate to, for example "/usr/local/bin".

Sounds like a bug . . .

Working like a charm - I like this feature. :-)
Now off to expplore the features . . .
BTW, seems I was a bit off as to where 5.8.6 is installed - it's
actually the binary that was installed into the /usr/local/bin directory.

Yep. It's a bug in ShuX though, not Cocoa.
That's what the "D'oh!" was about. :-(
Ah, well. At least it's a pretty easy fix.

According to the documentation for PerlMagic, Get('orientation')
should return the orientation tag for the image. I can't seem to get
any result back for this (ImageMagick-6.1.8, PerlMagick-6.20). I
checked the Magick.xs code, and it does not appear to actually
mention orientation in the code.
Am I confused, or is this not supported?
I tried contacting the author directly with no luck, the email bounces.
Any other suggestions for reading the information?
Thanks,
Peter.

Not with PerlMagick. I'd use Image::EXIF.
