Fresh perl build on Panther

Hi list.

I'm new here but thought seeing as I'm working on OSX I should
probably post here.

I'm about to start on building my own versions of Perl/Mod_perl/Apache

I've already got my own install of mod_perl and apache running quite
happily but am now having a problem with the built in perl version
(I'm about to start on Unicode, other posts coming soon, sorry) and
I've decided to get right up to date with the latest stable perl 5.8.6

http://search.cpan.org/~nwclark/perl/

OS X readme here:

http://search.cpan.org/~nwclark/perl/README.macosx

I'm posting this message as much for the mail archive as anything as I
didn't  find anything particularly helpful there.

I'm trying to run a script that demands at least 5.8.3 so I can't stay
where I am, as being a unicode newbie I've got to at least rule out my
older version of perl as being one of my current problems.

Has anyone done this before? Any problems or reasons not to install
your own version of perl in /usr/local/

Makes sense to me as it's not in the same place as the apple build,
therefore I can screw around without fear of screwing something system
oriented up. And should apple suddenly change everything I don't have
to jump when they do ;)

Cheers

That's actually a "release candidate" - the final 5.8.6 release is due
any day now.

It's brief, that's true - but that's primarily because there's not much
to say about it. The standard instructions for building and installing
under UNIX basically Just Work.

No problems, that's the default location.

Thanks Sherm.

Just wanted to narrow down my problems a bit ;)

perl.org does say 5.8.5 but goign to get source at cpan says 5.8.6 is
the current stable release:

http://www.cpan.org/src/README.html

So I've gone with that and we'll see what happens ;)

Sounds like you caught them squarely in the middle of an update. The
announcement was posted at <http://use.perl.org> yesterday afternoon,
saying that 5.8.6 was released on the 29th. They probably posted the
file a bit earlier though, and gave it time to work its way to all the
mirror sites before making the announcement.

None at all.

But as an intermediate user (myself, not you), I've found my life
immeasurably simpler letting darwinports ( http://darwinports.org)
handle all my installation issues, including perl, apache/mod_perl,
etc.

FYI,

sh ./Configure -ds -e -Dprefix=/usr -Dccflags="-g -pipe"
-Dldflags=-Dman3ext=3pm -Duseithreads -Duseshrplib

This would make your new perl compatible with /usr/bin/perl5.8.1,
if you want to use PerlObjCBridge, it is required to do so.
(Please notice that prefix=/usr, so it would install to /usr/bin/perl)

Since perl5.8.6's hints/darwin.sh already applied the one-line patch
in dports, no extra manual patch is required.
