weird problem

I tried to play a real-audio stream, but when I clicked on the link,
Quicktime opened and gave me an error (Unsupported transport).  The
error is unsurprising because QT doesn't support RA.  But I don't
understand why QT opened in the first place; Real Player should have
opened.

I was able to copy the link, then open Real Player, paste the link, and
play the piece, but it should have happened automatically.

It's doing you a favor.  The best way to handle RA is to call it an
error and find a site which carries the same content using a better
format.

Huh.  So every time that I'm successful in using RA to listen to
something I try to, and that's every time I try to, I should do it
another way despite the fact that it works flawlessly for me?

RA is a dinosaur. Find a site that uses something better.

You didn't actually read what I posted, did you?

Yes, I did.

You need to drop a few hints to the webmaster of the site you’re
browsing that it’s time to adopt a new, working format. Or at least keep
his/her old junk working.

What part of "every time that I'm successful in using RA to listen to
something I try to, and that's every time I try to" are you having
trouble with?

What part of RA do you not have trouble with?

Do you still use a 56k fax modem? Mac OS 7? Audio cassettes?

They still work, too.

Unlike your Newsreader.

More useless bluster from this idiot.

I don’t bother keeping a killfile. Jackasses like you are just too
entertaining.

What kind of weird question is that?  I click on a RA link, I hear the
audio I'm supposed to.  You tell me where the problem is.

RA.

You did, huh?  So when I said that I never have any problems whatsoever,
your response somehow made sense to you?

Yes, I'll be sure to complain to them that I'm not having any problems
of any kind and insist that they do something about it.

You are not Michelle Steiner, and for all I know not having the OP
handy, you’re not the OP either.

Get off your horse, Mike. This isn’t all about you.

I am the OP, and the problem wasn't with Real Player; it was with
QuickTime Player trying to play a Real Audio stream, when it can't
handle Real Audio.

I haven't found a deal that it WILL handle..

Try some different codecs.

Hmm. Interesting.

Is this problem encoutered when you click a link to a RealAudio file or
stream from a web page? If so, I’d bet it’s either a problem with how
the web server is set to treat RealAudio, or your browser’s MIME settings.

Well, frankly, this happened a week ago, and I've already forgotten.
But someone wrote in another branch of this thread that the problem may
have been a wrong setting in Real Audio's preferences.  I've changed
that setting, and should someone ever send me a link to a RA streaming
audio again, I'll see whether it works.

In the meantime, the workaround was to copy the URL, launch Real Player,
and paste the URL.

Excuse me?  You responded to _my_ post, in which I said RA works
flawlessly for me, be telling _me_ to "Find a site that uses something
better."  It's about me because _you_ made it about me.

Okay, I get it, _you_ respond to the wrong post and *I* don't understand
how newsgroups work.

You make a smartass response to a dead, no-archive post, then complain
that I’m responding to your post rather than the post that no longer
exists, and you *do* understand how newsgroups work? Hoo boy…

The post I responded to was _not_ no-archive and some 20 minutes old.

You quoted my post in its entirety in you response, then, when I asked
if you'd read what I'd posted, you said yes.

I certainly don't understand how your brain works.

Flawless isn't good enough.  *I* have to approve.  Is that clear?

in the real player preferences click on "media types". make sure the
appropriate media types you want to play with real player are checked.
if the link you mentioned is an rtsp:// link, then you will need to
check "real time streaming protocol".

hope this helps,

Thanks.  Next time I have to access a realtime stream, I'll see whether
it works.
