Thoth is my only newsreader.
Suffering a 70% to 80% reduction in dowload speeds since 5 days ago,
I've frantically contacted both Road Runner and Giganews.
So far, RR can't discern any problem,
and Giganews reports:
We have now received similar reports from other Road Runner customers
complaining in a reduction of speed. It would appear that Roadrunner may
have introduced some kind of traffic shaping on port 119. Our other
customers were able to regain their speeds by switching to ports 80 and
23.
I understand that you cannot change the port settings in your current
newsreader, but I'm afraid at this time this seems to be the only fix.

Is there, in fact, no way to change the ports in Thoth?
If not, what do you recommend -- switching to Unison?
Thanks,
lenny

I can see a thread of newsreader suggestions developing :)
The one I like is Hogwasher. This will not come as news to anyone that has
read any of my posts :)
Hogwasher really is one of the Mac's best kept secrets.
It is not cheap, but it is more than worth the extra money it costs.
At my humble web-site I have a page where I describe the things I like
about Hogwasher.

The Thoth User Guide says:
Go to the "News Server Settings" dialog box. In the "News Server"
topic, you can select non-standard ports by appending a colon and the
port number to the News Server name in the News Server text box. For
example, if you wanted to use port 15029 on the news server,
"wonderful.news.server.com", you'd enter,
"wonderful.news.server.com:15029" (without the quotes, of course).

Spot on, Rich. Yes indeed, a colon followed by the port number did the
trick.
Make me feel like an idiot. Googling turned up the same an instance of
the same solution, but with no confirmation. Then when Giganews
suggested it couldn't be done in Thoth, I came here.
Whooda thunk t'use the Manual, anywho.
Thanks,
lenny

By the way, this is standard for specifying a port number for any type
of server, be it news, mail, web, what have you. Some software have
fields to specify port numbers but all that they do is make it easier
for people who don't know what's going on to add the port number.
