Hi. I have a clamshell with a 466 G3 processor, 576 RAM and a 7200 RPM
60 gig HD. I'm currently running 10.3.9, but I've been thinking about
finally upgrading to Tiger. However, before I do so, I wanted to see if
anyone has thoughts about whether the forthcoming Leopard would run on
older G3s, and if so, if I should wait to upgrade. I don't have to
upgrade my software, but I'd like to, at least to Tiger, if not to
Leopard.
Thanks in advance!

There's no official, public statement on this matter.
There are several broken-NDA reports that the developer builds don't run
on G3s.

Since Tiger doesn't run on older G3's without XPostFacto I would tend
to doubt that Leopard would run.
It won't be a Apple decision as they have already made the "no it will
not be supported" decision.
It will be if the XPostfacto folk can get Leopard to run on said
machines.
(I am running 10.4.8 on an original iBook G3 clamshell, 300 MHz, 288 MB
ram, 3 GB HD).
Cheers,
Darrell

I am behaving (in my computer-buying) as if Leopard won't run on any
kind of G3. m.

According to what I've read, Leopard will not be compatible with any G3
systems. But there won't be anything official until after it ships
(probably in early 2007).
I think you should be OK with Tiger. According to MacTracker, the
466MHz model is a second-gen clamshell, with a FireWire port. If so,
then Tiger is supported.
You might be disappointed with Tiger's performance, however. Spotlight
and Dashboard add more stuff running in the background. They don't
consume a lot of CPU time, but they do consume memory, and you're
already maxed out at 576M.
