Hello.

I need to make an old Mac G4 wireless-enabled. The only way I guess I
can do this is an Ethernet bridge. Is that the case and, if so, has
anybody got any kit you can recommend to me as being easy to set up and
fully Mac compliant?

It has Tiger, so there should be no problem there.

Why? It doesn't have a PCI slot available? m.

"Old Mac G4" is more than a little vague -- G4 is simply the processor.
iMac? PowerBook? iBook? PowerMac?  What model is it, specifically?
That'll make it much easier to recommend options for you.

Sorry for the confusion. It's a PowerMac G4. It does have a PCI slot
available, but I didn't realise there were PCI options available.

Thanks

A-ha!  Indeed there are PCI options.  Here's one that should work for
you:

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/aria_pci.html

It's a little steep at $100, but it willl get your PowerMac online
wirelessly.  The problem is that the Apple Airport software only talks
to cards based on the Broadcom chipset, and they'll a little difficult
to find.

If you want to save some money and use a less-expensive card, there's a
third-party wireless driver from OrangeWare that will work with many
more cards:

http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/wirelessformac.html

The driver's free to try out, and $15 to purchase.  And with that
driver, you can use cards that are around half the price; there's a
list of known-compatible cards on the driver page above.

Does it also have a slot for the Airport card?  One of the older
Airport cards runs about $70 on eBay, for example.

In addition to those vendors mentioned, macwireless.com also makes and
sells PCI cards.

That stil leaves more than 10 possible models. *Which* PowerMac G4
exactly? Except for the very first Powermac G4 (the "PCI graphics") they
all have an AirPort slot built-in AFAIK. So if 802.11b would be good
enough for you, just get an Apple "Airport". (Not "Airport Extreme".)

Else, a PCI card would indeed be an option. (Looking at prices it seems
that that could actually be cheaper even.)
