There are issues here. I talked to Apple tech support because my
external apple modem froze the system - caused a kernel panic. Could be
a bad modem, will know soon.

Found an Airport Extreme and got online using it. System setup was very
smooth. Will return / exchange USB external modem soon - I'd still like
to be able to get online with and have the fax capabilities.

The only kernel panic I've had turned out to be caused by a broken wire in
a USB mouse I was using with an iBook G3.
You didn't say much about your system. The Apple USB modem requres a G4
machine. Assuming your iMac is a G4, your best scenario would be a
defective external modem. The worst would be a defective mother board in
the computer!
