Well, that'd be one way to get rid of IE's security flaws.

Last week the rumor was that Google was buying Opera.

Appears to have been shot down by Opera.
Of course <eyes turn shifty> They would say that, wouldn't They?
Honestly, though, why? Sure Opera has fewer security flaws, but it
also... well, sucks, and doesn't do the same things as Internet
Explorer. By the time Microsoft merged the engine with Windows,
Microsoft might as well start over from scratch. And certainly, fixing
IE would be easier.

MS has a habit of "buying what we can't make/fix" so it may be true.
Firefox is my browser of choice however ;)

However Firefox doesn't work on mobile phones, whereas Opera does (and
is the default browser on many models). In some countries there are now
significantly more mobile phones with browsers than there are computers
(the ratio in China is reputed to be 3.6 to 1). Another way to get a
foothold in an expanding area, and possibly stall phone makers.
Microsoft also bought STNC in 1998 to get the browser they use in their
PDAs (that browser was used in Psion PDAs prior to the Microsoft
purchase).

True, but a port isn't impossible ...
How can I tell what browser is running on my Sony Ericsson k700i ?
(It doesn't look like Opera to me)

Looks for specifications. I think the k700i is using a WAP 2.0 browser
(not that anyone uses WAP these days) with xHTML support, but I don't
know who made it. I think you can get Opera Mini as an add-on, just use
your WAP browser to download it from Opera (should work on most phones
with Java). Check for Opera Mini in software downloads (web pages get
pre-processed before being sent on to your phone). http://mini.opera.com/
By the way, the Nokia S60 browser for N80 and E61 phones is based on
WebCore and KDE KHTML. It will be interesting to see phones with a
2.4inch 352x416 resolution, as well as the QVGA (320x240). That is
starting to get serious.

Thanks, it was WAP and now has mini Opera running nicely :-)
