Could somebody please make a suggestion of what FTP program I should use
in Mac OS 8.6 to FTP to a friend's computer running Red Hat Linux? For
some reason Fetch 4.0.1, Fetch 3.0.3 and 3.0.1 all stall out on "Getting
directory list" after making the initial connection. I have no trouble
with LeechFTP on my Windows computer, nor do I have any trouble if I run
Yellow Dog Linux on the same computer. It only happens with Fetch or
Mozilla. I've never had a problem with Fetch before, which is why I'm
still using those old versions. Actually, I pulled 3.03 & 3.01 from my
old version backups.
The remote computer is set up to require a login/pass, and I need to be
able to both upload (put) and download (get). Downloading multiple files
in sequance (NOT concurrently, since he's using a modem) like Fetch
does is also a must.

The best FTP program in those days was Anarchie. m.

Anarchie's strength was in its ability to search Archie. That capability
aside, Fetch worked quite adequately for FTP per se. Anarchie has morphed
into Interarchy. A MacOS 8.6-compatible version is still sold by Peter Lewis'
company.

And Fetch has morphed into ... Fetch.
I belive it's a 5.0.4 these days <http://fetchsoftworks.com/> - Fetch 4 was
compatible with MacOS 8.
I think that Jim Matthews purchased the rights from Dartmouth after walking
away with the cash from "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" and established Fetch
Softworks.
Fetch is still the only popular GUI solution which works with just about any
host I can throw at it - from mainframes to micros.

That's odd - 3.0.3 works just fine under OS 7.x on most old macs I've
used it on, and certainly works fine under OS 9.
Try Customize->Preferences, under the Misc tab check "Treat mystery
items as files", and maybe try increasing the file list cache size.
Under the Firewall tab, try turning passive mode on/off, and check that
the range of data ports makes sense.
Since other FTP programs work, it has to be a configuration issue in
Fetch, so you could compare the settings in your LeechFTP with Fetch...

Have you checked whether you should be using passive or active ftp to
that server? I don't remember whether it is in the program or on the
system settings on the Mac, but it's there somewhere. Behavious will be
like you are describing most of the time if that is set wrong.
