I have an Apple ibook G4 1GHz with 256MB. I try to run an educational
software program, which states requirement of Mac system 7.5.3 or
higher, 32mb ram, 15 mb available on hard drive, 4x cd-rom
drive,256-color. However, the software was not running and the pop-up
log asking to
maximize the memory to 128 MB of RAM. Here is the quote I found from
the Mac Help area:
" Some Mac OS 9 applications make use of "temporary memory" on your
hard disk in order to work faster. When you start the Classic
environment, Mac OS X sets aside a temporary memory area for the use of
Mac OS 9 applications. The default size of the temporary memory area is
about 128 MB (less on computers with less than 128 MB of RAM). Some
applications may need more than the default amount of temporary memory.
On the other hand, increasing the size of temporary memory decreases
the amount of memory that's available for applications. Some Mac OS 9
applications work best if the temporary memory size is reduced to free
up more memory for the application."
So I think I need to go to the System Preferences and change the memory
size in Classic preferences, because the computer says Classic is
running using folder "system folder" on Volume in "Macontosh HD"
When I went in the Classic and click Memory/Versions, there was no
Memory button as what the Mac Help advised, not to mention, I have no
way to dray memory allocation slider to adjust the size of temporary
memory.
So I click Advanced button under Classic, there shows 3 options:
startup and other option, Classic sleep, and rebuild classic destop.
Does any of these need to be changed in order to run my software?
I do see the name of my software program in there when I click the
Start/Stop bottom under Classic, but I cannot do anthing.
Does anyone know what to do? I simply want to run my software?
Thanks.

Maybe you just want to increase the memory allocated to your
"educational software program" while running in Classic mode.
In the Finder, Select the "educational software program"
In the Finder, Menu -> File -> Get Info (Cmd-I)
In the Get Info panel -> Memory -> Preferred Size: 128000
If you want, you can also play with the Minimum Size as well.
