Hi. I'm trying to connect an old G3 beige (G3 tower/333MHz/OS 8.6) Mac
to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I plugged it into the LAN port on
the base station, and in OS 8.6's TCP/IP control panel, I selected
"Connect via Ethernet" and "Configure using DHCP server."

For some reason I can't figure out, the G3 is not being assigned an IP
address by the Airport Extreme Base Station.

What could be wrong?  This G3 works fine when it's networked on an
ordinary LAN. Other machines that I've plugged into the LAN port have
worked fine.

I also tried assigning the G3 a static IP. Still no go. What could be
wrong?

Thank you,
Roger Carlson

Problem solved. I needed a crossover cable to connect the old 8.6 G3 to
the Airport Base Station.

Yes. Or better still, use normal ("straight") cables and add a
hub/switch between the airport base and the computer. This way you have
the option to add more dveices (such as other computers or networkable
printers) whenever you like.
