OS 9 and AVI Files

OS 9 machine running QT 6.03

For some reason AVI files are not playing as they should in QT.

I keep getting an error message that the file cannot be understood by
QT.

I've checked all the settings and all should be OK right down to File
Exchange's listings.

Might I be missing some codec?  I'm pretty sure I have all that I can
run.

Also I *was* able to view some kind of AVI and still seem to be able
to view some older ones still - or so it seems.  So while I can view
an MPG movie clip I cannot view any that are AVI.

Can anyone suggest new settings, what prefs to dump, or what otherwise
to do?

Thanks.

"AVI" is rather misleading since it covers a variety of codec formats.

If you haven't already, you should download and install ALL of these
extra codecs to add to QuickTime's abilities (you need all the Indeo
ones, not just version 5):

  - Indeo 3.2
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30903

  - Indeo 4.4
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30904

  - Indeo 5
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60366

  - DivX 5.1.1
    http://www.divx.com/divx/download/

  - 3ivx D4 4.5.1
    http://www.3ivx.com/download/macos.html

You may also want to download DivX Doctor II from
http://www.3ivx.com/divxdoctor/

That will let you play SOME .avi movie files, but because AVI are
Windows formats, not all the needed codecs are available for the Mac,
so you simply can't play some movie files at all.

This one was not coming up - server inaccessible error.  Possibly a
localized DNS issue or bad router someplace.  I'll check later on.

I'm pretty sure that I have all ofthese installed but will check and
compare with fresh downloads.

Thanks.

We'll see what happens.

That link works fine for me, so you could be right about it being
somewhere at your end (your connection or your ISP).

The link I gave just before that one is actually on the same
www.3ivx.com website.

Let me know here if you can't get through and I'll see if I can upload
those files somewhere else, although it may take me a while if they're
big since I'm only on a dial-up connection.  :o(

Finally got it.

I've installed or reinstalled everything.

I'll try downloading a couple of AVI files to see what happens.

If it doesn't work this time I'll just give up and pass it along to an
XP I have here.

Thanks again.

avi is just a container - it can use various codecs and apparently you
are missing the one used by this movie.

open the movie in quicktime player then do a get properties (cmd-j)
from within quicktime player itself and see what the video format is.

once you know which codec, you can determine if you have it or if you
need to download another codec (assuming it exists for mac os 9).

Thats what I am concerned about - existing for OS 9.

No "Three Stooges" for me I guess - at least that title.  <LOL>
