Battery problem

Is this as bad as it sounds?   A week ago, I had a problem with my iBook.  It
froze up installing something and I couldn't shut if off in any method.  So I
removed the battery which of course made it turn off.  After replacing it,
I've found after getting a full charge it will go down to somewhere just
under 50% and then, poof!  It's powered off.  When I then put the power
adapter in and fire the machine up again, the battery power shows at 0% and
then continues to climb.  Back up to 100% again.  After that, same thing.
Gets down to just below 50% and then drains instantly.

Is it fried because I removed it and if so, why?  Doesn't make sense really
and is there some way to fix it?

I have no real information for you other than a similar thing happened to me.
12" 1 GHz PowerBook. About a year old when it happened and I admit to the
battery already not being as good as when new. But when I did what you did,
boom, less than 5 minutes of normal use. I have done all the usual reset
tricks. I think something is definitely hosed. Using iTattle and grepping the
capacity I get the same info. Trouble is it can't be right. Best I can find
is that PB batteries should last 300 to 500 charge cycles. Mine, that is for
all intents and purposes, near death, shows 190. Why I believe that's not
right, besides the quality of use is that the first time I used iTattle and
grep they both showed 188 cycles. In between that 188 and 190 I have
purposely charged and run down the battery well over 10 times.

Have you tried resetting the Power manager?  See
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449> for details.

No, I haven't tried that (yet) and it sounds rather risky.  Last resort type
thing.  On the other hand, maybe it will reset everything correctly?

It isn't risky and it is quite likely to fix the problem.

Well, then if two people feel that way I suppose it's worth a try.  Two
people, sheesh, no wonder mobs can collect so quickly :-)

Thanks to all...

Ok, well I've tried that and things are still the same.  I really am
struggling with this as I didn't think removing the battery would be such a
disaster.

But I'm still hoping there is a fix somewhere out there...
