I'm a new user of apple computers.  I have purchased an AirPort Extreme
Base Station.  I am planning the following setup:
(1)Connect dsl to base station
(2)Connect my laptop to the wireless network that is now set up
(3)Using an ethernet cable, connect a desktop to the base station

Will this set up provide internet on both the laptop and the desktop?

I live in an old house with thick walls, how will this impact my
wireless setup?

I appreciate your help

It should.

Be prepared to do a bit of experimentation regarding base station
placement. I live in a 25-year-old ranch house with a walkout finished
basement. With a single base station, I've been unable to work out a
location that gives me a good signal throughout the house and on the
back deck. (However, I do pick up neighbors' base stations from the
deck, and not all of them have any kind of security.)

Yes

This is better than newer houses, as the brick walls are more permeable
than concrete (with reinforcing steel).

Oh yes, that should work fine.  At our house, we've got my iBook connected to
the wireless network and my wife's Windows XP desktop connected directly to
the airport.  Actually, the one my wife's is on is a bit confusing so bear
with me.

The output from the base station  goes to a hub and the Airport.     The hub
feeds her machine and also has a line going downstairs to another hub and at
that one, my son's Windows ME machine is connected there.  Then I also have
an iMac which is fed from that same hub downstairs.  All four computers work
fine and in fact, my wife often brings her work laptop home and connects
upstairs to the Airport as there is a hard connection on it as well.

Follow:-)

I think the Airport itself allows 12 different wireless connections but I
only use the one.  But because of that logic, I figured just sending a line
elsewhere would work fine and it does.

I really can't say about the thick walls as here we just have standard 2 x 4
framework yet I also can't see that being a problem.   The Airport connection
is supposed to be good for up to 150' just like your cordless phone and that
distance should be your only barrier...
