I have a new iMac G5, running 10.4.2. Safari 2.0 from time to time runs very
slowly, and pages won't open "because the server is not responding." I get
similar results with FireFox, but not with IE. I checked with Apple Tech
Support, and they had me clear Safari's cache and reset, to no avail.
A G3 desktop connected to the same switch (they're both connected to a
router, thence to a cable modem) runs IE faster than Safari on the G5, when
I check them within seconds of each other.
Any suggestions?

IE is very fast as long as there's no DHTML involved. Hit some heavy
DHTML and IE will spin the beachball for a minute before returning. IE
also gains some performance by rendering pages incorrectly.
Safari might be getting caught on page components, like advertisements,
that don't load. Try using OmniWeb. You can view a list of exactly
what's inside a web page, see what's stuck loading, and block annoying
ad servers.
