When I read an article it receives the "read" checkmark. When I come
back to the group the next day, all the "read" checkmarks are gone. What
do I do to retain the read checkmarks from day to day?
Thanks in advance...

It's not mssing check marks. All artiucles markes as "read" aren't
fetched the next time.

Use an offline newsclient, like MacSOUP.
However, it is just an issue of the articles not being fetched by MT-NW.
If they are still on your newsserver, you can still fetch them when you
want. MT-NW offers many different ways. RTFM ;)

Are you opening the group from the Full Group List ("All Groups on
<server>") window, or from a separate window that shows only the groups
you're subscribed to?
If you open a group from the Full Groups List window, then as soon as you
close the group, MT-NewsWatcher forgets which messages you've read. The
next time you open the same group the messages will all be "unread".
If you open a group from a subscriptions window, MT-NewsWatcher only shows
you the messages that you haven't read yet. It won't show you the ones
that were previously marked as "read". There are several ways to get
MT-NewsWatcher to show you those older messages, but I believe they all
result in the messages being marked as "unread", so you won't see any
checkmarks.
See the online manual for more info:

Thanks. That answers my question fully.

In the news server news group window right click on the news group you
want to see all the posts on. A contextual menu will pop up and choose
Mark articles unread. You will then see all of the posts in that news
group that are on your news server.
