Ebay (potential) fraud alert

Thread view:

Surfing through eBay I noticed several Imac G5 computers for sale, but
listed under categories like jewelry, toy trains, etc. The seller is
mob45 with 311 feedbacks 100% positive.

However, the listing asks to send email to an aol account "before
taking any action". Contacted via eBay, "seller" says I only sell toy
trains, contact the aol guy. The aol guy wants payment by WU, offering
to sell for 800 when bids are already above that amount.

I must say I am extremely confused. Any guesses? If this smells of a
hijacked account, anybody knows how to alert eBay?

WU is the trigger. It's almost certainly a scam.

Thank you. I did report and (taking no credit, eBay may have heard from
others too) they are removed.

Can you give more details, like the ID number for the G5 iMac that this
person is offering.

I checked the listings for mob45 and he is only listing items related to
model trains and is not offering any computers. You might have the
persons User Name wrong.

As a seller on eBay I'm very concerned about weeding out fraudulent
sellers as they damage the experience for others.

I reported them to eBay, besides posting here, and others may have too,
and they have been removed. I had placed 3 items on my watch list:
#s 5966386810, 5966392047, 5966391702.
They were all G5 Imac computers listed in weird categories.

I don't have the seller account wrong. The following is an exact email
received from the "seller" (hijacked account I believe) via eBay system
(edited to remove personal info):

If this email is an offer to directly sell you an item without bidding
on and winning the item on eBay, please report it to us immediately at

claims or feedback, as you lose the benefit of eBay's purchase
protection programs and risk losing your money.

Doesn't look hijacked to me.  If it were, why would mob45 refer
you to the other guy at the other email address?    Looks like
he was letting a friend list under his ID, and got caught.....or
trying to make it look like he *was* hijacked.

You are right. However, seeing the perfect FB score i was giving him
the benefit of doubt that maybe both his eBay and email accts were
hijacked.

How come you two are posting identical messages, with
no replies....?

My error, apologies, etc. Just ignore that confusion. A few family
members share this computer and what happens is that A forgets to sign
out and B starts surfing and posts something which goes under A's name.
If I notice this, I correct it by canceling the first post and sending
another one with right name. Ideally the first post should just
disappear but maybe it survives here and there.

Listing are gone! I Saw Newbie's previous post and rechecked the item #'s
just now and they no longer exist. I did see the G5 listed under jewelry.  I
also noticed the replies to the earlier post are missing as well... Hmmm. An
inside job?

Possibly someone managed to compromise mob45's account.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, but certain accounting practices can
 result in a fully-depreciated one.

It smells to high heaven like a scam including the Western Union
payment.  Stay away.
