How good is PGP support in Mail.app?  Is it broken, working with some
quirks, or does it "just work"?

A: No.  See:                                                          Help, I'm

Q: Should I include quotations after my reply?                         factory!

Well, are you talking about the free GNU version, PGP's version, or
their commercial Desktop PGP ($59)?

AFAIK, it doesn't just work.  You have to run something to integrate
encryption into the application--GPG or PGP's.

I have been using it (8.1) for some time. It just works.
Quite elegantly.

I've been using GPGMail <http://www.sente.ch/software/GPGMail/> for
some time and basically it just works, provided that you have GnuPG
installed (instructions on how to do that are available on the page I
linked to). Cheers,

I use GPGMail too, and haven't had any problems with it, for my use
pattern.

Yes, but the OP wanted to know if Mail.app can use PGP without any
extras.  I haven't tried it, so I can't say precisely.  But the stuff
that's out there for PGP are add-ons.  So, I'm guessing Mail.app can't
without help.

Is that the case or not?

It can handle encryption and signing on its own, using certs in the
Keychain (if you have any).  Look at "About encryption and digital
signatures" in the Help.
