I am trying to network my PowerMac G5 with a Windows 2000 PC using a
crossover cable. I know the cable works because I had it connecting two
PCs successfully. Furthermore, I know the hardware on each computer
works, because packets are being sent and received.

However, neither computer can see the other. The PC does not appear in
the Mac's network pane, and the Mac cannot be found in the PC's
"network places."

Appletalk is running on both computers but I am unable to specify a
zone. Both computers have file sharing enabled.
Can anybody tell me what I might be missing? Thanks.

I wonder if your workgroup is set the same on both machines? You can set
your SMB workgroup in the Directory Access application. This should allow
your XP box to access the Mac box. You may need to reboot and wait a while,
I find that XP takes several minutes to scan the interfaces.

As for Mac to XP, make sure any antivirus software is disabled and a folder
is shared, then try to connect with
smb://MachineName/ShareName

where ShareName is the name you gave in the sharing window.

That's all I can think of.

PerlGrrl, I didn't know you were a Mac user. I think I've seen you on
comp.unix.shell.
