Modem won't dial after waking from sleep

When I wake the PB from sleep and attempt to dial up an internet connection,
I get "A modem error occurred." No numbers, etc, just the message. It doesn't
even attempt to dial.

After anywhere from 2 to 4 attempts, it will succeed in dialing.

Any ideas what this might be caused by?

PB G3/400; OS X 10.3.7; Internal Apple modem

Thanks,

Please, no "Go Google this" replies. I wouldn't
ask a question here if I hadn't done that already.

Mine also, though I do not get any error message, just no response.

You have to wait about 10 seconds after waking for the modem to be able
to respond.
