I keep getting this error message: "There was an error joining the
AirPort network..."
I have to keep trying, and trying, and *then* the computer (OSX 10.3.6)
will join the network.
I tried deleting the AirPort prefs file and restarting - no go.
What's the matter here? Has anybody else had this problem?

Did it ever work? You might consider making a network location dedicated to
this AP entering the info such as "by default join network X". Make sure
it's set for DHCP.
Also, think about a hard reset of the Airport.

I tried both that ("Join a specific network") and Automatic. Neither
helps.
Also tried deleting the Airport prefs file, that didn't help either.

I'm not using an Airport base station. I have a Motorola SBG900 modem
with wireless built in.

Yes. Turning AirPort off (from the AirPort menu) for a few seconds then
back on often helps. This can also be the easiest way to reconnect to a
network after sleep or startup.
Also, check your keychain (with /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access)
for obsolete AirPort network passwords.
