Hello,

In PC, what are COM ports? They are serial com ports, right? In my
computer, I find  4 ports: COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4. But I only see two
serial ports: (RS232). Where the other ports?

Modem seems using COM3. Modem is a PCI card. I feel confused why is
Modem considered as COM port device?

Thanks,

Because that's how shrink-wrapped software knows how to interact with
it. And this is really OT here.

Standard output is like your butt. Everyone has one. When using a bathroom,
they all default to going into a toilet. However, a person can redirect his
"standard output" to somewhere else, if he so chooses.  - Jeremy Nixon

Why are you asking about PCs in a Mac newsgroup?  Lucky for you I'm feeling
generous enough today to give quick answers to your off-topic questions...

PCs define those 4 names for serial ports, but most PCs are built with only
2 serial ports.  People can add a card to get more serial ports.

1) Because PC apps see it as a serial port that's connected to an external
modem.

2) Because COM = communications.
