Modem jsut quit. Phone line OK, get dial tone.

When I try to connect, no dial tone heard, no dialing tones.

Error dialog says "A modem error occurred."  In the past, when phone line was
bad, etc., error was "Can't detect dial tone" (or such wording).

Prior to this trouble, I had installed JackToolsOSX beta s/w for controlling
sound inputs and outputs, but uninstalled it (dragged all components I could
find into the trash) an hour later.

I realize that modem failure could be coincident with trial of beta SW, but
am leaning toward it being a completely separate issue.

Tried cold boot, PRAM reset, PowerManager reset. No joy.

Ideas?

PB G3/400; OS X 10.3.4

Please, no "Go Google this" replies. I wouldn't
ask a question here if I hadn't done that already.

delete the preferences file for the modem. Use Hardware Test Disk (if
available). Reinstall OS.
