I have an old M68K Q650 Mac with OS 7.5.5, TCP/IP 1.1, and it won't always
accept an IP from my Nexland Pro 400 router. (Usually, it fails.)
Using Ethereal on a PC, with the Mac and PC both connected to a hub I see
the Mac requesting an IP (it's set up for DHCP), and I see the router
returning an IP, but all the Mac does is re-request an IP from the router.
Sometimes (rarely), it works. Most of the time, it doesn't. I see "Unable to
establish a network socket connection." when starting Netscape, and a ping
(MacPing) from the Mac to the PC yields "Unable to open resolver."
1) Does anyoneone know what might be wrong?
2) Is there some sort of Mac timeout I can change to make the Mac wait a bit
longer for a response, or for it to look more quickly?
3) What can I do to fix this, or to troubleshoot it more?
Please let me know.

Upgrade the Open Transport to Version 1.2. 1.1 had DCHP Problems.

Thanks Bruce, but I can't find OT1.2 on Apple's web site or on other web
sites, much less for a Q650 (Moto 68040 processor).
Does anyone out there have OpenTransport 1.2?

Forget OT 1.2! After much searching around on Apple's web site, I found an
article that says OT1.2 requires at least OS 8.
Guess I'll try OT 1.1.2 to see if that solves my problem.

Configure the Mac manually and give it a high number within the correct
range so it won't conflict with any addresses the router hands out via
DHCP on a small network. If your Mac doesn't ask for anything there
should be no problems.
Use something like 192.168.0.200 (use the correct format/range).
Then just use it and don't worry about why DHCP doesn't work :)
That's how we did it in the old days. Because it works. You could die of
old age before you debug all the problems of System 7.5.x.
