I don't have an "Internet" panel in "System Preferences. Should I have?
I have a plain vanilla 10.3.3 installation; nothing custom. Should I
start complaining to Apple?
However, your advice got me to the proper location in the Help, where I
discovered I could set the preferred "html opening" application as a
Safari Preference when running Safari; it would never have occured to me
that Apple wanted me to use Safari to tell the system not to use Safari.
Kind of a round about way to set a system parameter, IMO. What's up with
that, Apple? Anyway, I set the Safari Preference to Firefox, which
seemed to work.
So, thanks for the hint - it worked, as a hint to get me started.

And in case you haven't noticed, you can set Thunderbird to be the
default mail client in the preferences for Mail.app.
You can also use the Internet control panel in Classic (!) or a
third-party utility like RCDefaultApp to change these settings
(including news: URLs etc).

No, the other poster was mistaken. You can set your default Mail and Web
prefs in (no, I don't get it either) Safari. Or Internet Explorer.
You can remedy this oversight by Apple by downloading the free RC
Default Apps system pref panel. Check versiontracker or macupdate for a
copy. It will grant you full control over what opens what, internet-wise.

I know. Weird.
