New to TB on Mac, ex-NS4.7 on PC user

Having problem in newsreader of TB getting View/Threads/Threads with
Unread setting to hold from one session to next. Resets itself to All.
Have 36 NGs I watch. Some hold. Others don't. Unable to see a pattern.
Other settings same for all groups (ie Sort Order = Order Received,
Messages = All)

Am I missing something, or what??

Does the problem occur on specific servers, or on all your news servers?

I only use one news server (Earthlink at news.west.earthlink.com) to
watch the 36 various newsgroups. Some hold the setting. Others do not.

FWIW, netscape.public.mozilla.mac holds OK
comp.dcom.telecom does not

This is not a problem with my older Win98/Netscape 4.7 PC

Yes, my friend.  You ARE "missing something".  That "something" is
MT-NewsWatcher 3.4 as your newsreader.  Thunderbird, like all Mozilla
newsreaders, is a very poor application, and it has very poor filtering.

Investigate MT-NewsWatcher 3.4 for Macintosh.  The license is free.

It's configuration is pretty hard to get used to, but will pay dividends
in the long run.

Also, it has extensive filtering, including the ability to bubble
"watched" threads to the top of the display, and the ability to weight
threads using scoring.

The best Windows newsreader is ForteAgent 3.2.  It will do everything
that MT-NewsWatcher will do, and MUCH more.  However, there is no Mac
version of this excellent application for PCs, and it appears that Forte
has no plans for porting it over to the Mac anytime soon; (this is very
sad, since I am a long-time Agent user, but have switched platforms to
the Mac).

If you do a lot of binary downloads, I advise you to purchase a license
for Unison (latest version).  It is an excellent binary downloader, and
was designed from the ground up for downloading binaries.  Unison is a
Macintosh application.
