So yes, indeed they are different versions. Users of the differing
versions may be of more assistance as to which they prefer. The reports
I have heard regarding the WamCom version have been good

I like and use Wamcom, it's excellent on Mac 8.6 - 9x. I have not tried
the Japanese distro, so cannot comment further
