No idea what it is, but I can't find it! In Safari it's easy to find
and disable. I was told for security purposes to disable Java but not
Javascript (no idea what that is either). Searched Mozilla help,
forums, here, etc. Maybe I'm stupid (well I am but i mean for this) or
maybe there is no Java!

That should be simple.  Go into Preferences and click on Advanced.
First choice should be "Use Java".  Just uncheck the box and that's that.

Hi, thanks for the help.

In advanced I get scripts & plugins, which has Javascript (which I was
told to leave on) but not Java! Also in advanced are a bunch of other
unrelated things like proxies, keyboard navigation, proxies, HTTP,
software installation, mouse, etc....

I be confused!

You just need to go to Advanced, not Advanced > Scripts & Plugins.
Back up a level.

Thanks! But.....I still be confused!

In advanced I get these and nothing more:

scripts and plugins
keyboard navigation
cache
proxies
http networking
software installation
mouse wheel
DOM inspector

Do I have a different version? :o)

But this is in the Category pane, what's to the right?
Have you clicked ON Advanced?   Try collapsing Advanced.
The Java enable and password for anonymous FTP should be
appearing to the right, in the main part of the window.

I'm running 1.7.2 on Mac OS X 10.2.

AAAHHHGGGGGG.....I was assuming that "advanced" in itself was nothing;
I thought that advanced was only something where you had to go and
click on "sub" categories of advanced. I didn't realize there's
"advanced" by itself (where I found Java, thanks!) and THEN you have
the option to go further into subcategories.

Silly me.

So I should just leave JavaScript alone, leave it on, right? As far as
privacy?

THANKS FOR HELPING A SILLY PERSON!!

P.S. I realize I spelled "disable" incorectly..... :oP

I try to leave it off.   At least we're on Macs, so we don't have
to worry about (as many?) exploits/abuses.  Part of leaving
Javashit^h^h^h^hscript off it to avoid being jerked around as
much by obnoxious site features.  Of course, there are the
idiot sites which require Javashit^h^h^h^hscript to work.
I'd give a lot to have a Java[ok, I'll stop]script on/off
button on the Nav. bar.  (And also move the Home button there
so I can get rid of the Personal toolbar.)  Guess I have to
check so see if there are any extensions for this, or I can
learn how to make one.
