When I used disc utility to "Verify Disc" It indicated an
"Invalid Node".
Disc Repair" ran through three cycles and indicated it could
not repair
the volume.
First: What is an invalid node?
Second: If I erase and reformat the drive will this
eliminate the problem?
I hope to back up all my info and then reformat and
partition the drive.

A node is part of the directory structure. The directory structure is the
list that the OS uses to tell it where on the HD all the various data is. If
the directory structure is damaged, then you either need to use a utilities
program to fix it, or re-install the OS.
DiskWarrior is especially good a fixing directories, but there are problems
that even it cannot fix. Erasing the HD would fix the problem, but I would
probably try an archive and install of the OS first.

It is likely that Disk Warrior can fix it. DW is a utility that is
well worth the purchase price.
