Power Book Latch

Hi guys,

I know this problem has been around for a long time, but I can't quite
figure out what my next move should be, in spite of some online searching.

The latch on my PowerBook G4 Titanium has stopped working.  If I watch
closely when closing the cover, I can see the little magnet part swing
down, but it is not latching.  The case is not latched, and the lid has
a desire to come back up.

I can look into the little hole on the lower case part, and see that the
bar that is supposed to come forward is not all the way forward.  That
is, the part that slides in and out seems to be stuck back a little
ways.  The release button also seems like it  is pushed in a little bit.

I saw a lot of discussion about various latch problems, but not this
exact one.  Is there anything that I can do myself about this?  The
machine is not only out of warranty, my extended Apple Care plan  has
even run out.  So, a trip to the Apple Store may be expensive.  But, if
that is the only way to fix this, I guess that is what I will do.

It's not life or death, because I can still get the machine to go to
sleep.  I have to be real careful about carrying it around, though, as
it wants to open and wake up.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You should be able to prevent automatic waking with the pmset command in
Terminal.

Neill,

I found your response to this in another thread, and have used the pmset
to disable automatic waking.  What's nice is that this is a persistent
change, and it remembers it after reset, so you only have to do it once
(until you want to set it back).

So, thank you for the hint, this addresses my biggest concern with the
broken latch.  I'm still not thrilled about the lid kind of flopping
around when I'm carrying it, but at least the machine is asleep.  But, I
can limp along now until I get the latch fixed.

If you want a frugal option, but not pretty, just buy a strap from a
luggage store and fasten it around the Powerbook when you need to carry
it around. You can buy a luggage strap for around $5.

How about bending it back a little? Its simply trying to hook on too far
forward.

Pick up a T6 Torx driver at Sears and take the back off and clean out around
that magnet. They tend to collect ferrous particles in there and lose their
snappitude. It's tricky getting the spring in place, you'll learn fast.

Sheesh! Why not use a bungy cord? Or the rubber straps the truckers use to
tie down their tarp?
