Last night, quite by accident, I noticed a magnetic field at the upper
right of my 24" iMac's display.  A little more investigating revealed
that there are 14 such regions around the display itself: four each
spaced along the top and bottom and three each at the sides.

Anyone know what purpose they serve?

If you were to attached suctions cups to the display screen and pull you
would find out that the glossy cover plate is held in place by these
magnets and can be removed for cleaning.

I thought that might be the case.  Thanks for confirming it.

Is a special tool required to remove the glossy cover plate?

The "as seen on TV" suction cup gripper will work.
