I just got back the Pismo my daughter has been using for four years. The
display has a bit of "play"; that is, over a small angle, it has no
resistance to being pushed back and forth from wherever it is
positioned. If it is pushed further, it moves "with resistance" and then
stays in the new position, but with that same play.
Now the problem is, I just don't remember whether it was always that
way, or whether the "looseness" developed while she was using it.
Should a Pismo have that play, or should it be tight?
If something is loose (screws, I suppose), what should I take apart to
fix it, the base unit, or the display.

It is a wellknown problem with both Lombard and Pismo that the hinges
will loosen through the years. And 'cause the hinges is a friction type,
there are no screws to fasten....
You can probably buy a pair of new hinges in an Apple tech shop and
exchange the old ones with the new set. But to do this yourself, you
need the Apple Service Manual for the Pismo/Lombard series. If you don't
have this manual, you can mail me off-list, and I'll send you all the
Pismo service manuals that I have in PDF format.
Of course you also can take it to a local Apple tech store, but i guess
thaat will cost more than the Pismo is worth, - though the Pismo infact
is one of the best of the PBs of that time. - I had one myself for some
years, at the time I had my samll service business to use when I went
out to clients. - Great if you had to copy data before fx. reformatting
another harddisk in a computer....
If you want the manuals, use this address <mac-manNOSP@Mstofanet.dk> -
