Failing DVD burner in MBP?

I have a 15" 2.4 GHz MBP. Lately it's been failing to write DVDs.

Popcorn 3.0.2 gives me this error message:

  The drive reported an error:
  Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
  Sense Code = 0x0C
  WRITE ERROR

At first, I thought it might be some cheap blanks I had, so I went out
and bought some Sony disks... same failure.

It seems to write CDs without any problems.

I've read several places advising NOT to use so-called disk cleaners on
my MBP. Has anyone ever used one of these cleaners successfully on a MBP?

The MBP is still under warranty.

What do you think? Is this a hardware failure? Should I take it in the
the Apple store?

Thanks

O.

Exactly whic model is the DVD drive - Sony, Matshita, Pioneer?

I've seen some reports that some of the Sony drives used in MB/MBP
sometimes won't burn DVDs

You may only use a dry CD/DVD cleaning tool such as the one from AM with
a small brush on the writing surface. - Never use any kind of liquid -
only dry cleaning

Try first to delete the Popcorn prefs file from
username/library/preferences. - And then try to burn again. - I know
this could cost you 2-3 medias, but to avoid any problems if it isn't a
hardware error.

If you have tried it with a 'DVD -R' media, I'd recommend first to try
it with a new 'DVD -R' media after having deleted the prefs file. Then
try it with a 'DVD +R' media after having deleted the prefs file again -
Some drives don't like one type, but works fine with the other.

If the error persists, I'd take it to the store, since it then very well
could be a hardware error.

DVD media seem much more fussy than CD, and DVD-DL is even worse.

From my experience, if you have a finicky drive, try Verbatim media. It
seems to be the most reliable. If your MBP won't burn a Verbatim disc,
take it to your Apple service person.

Your mileage and coaster production may vary.

True, which is why I'm used to buying Philips blanks.  I'm always
surprised when any computer makes a valid DVD.

Thanks everyone for your responses. There's an Apple store not far from
my home.  I think I'll take it in.

Same as here on MBP 2.2 Ghz and iMac 20" 2.16 Ghz
(Many thanks to Apple and build in MATSHITA trash..)

FYI

I took into the Apple Store. It wouldn't even recognize a blank DVD in
the drive. They logged it in and told me that I'd have it back in less
than 5 days.  I really choked on "5 days". Then they said they usually
get stuff back in two, but they have to say 5.

I left the store at 1 P.M.

They called me at 4:30 and told me to come pick it up.
They put in a new drive.

I just burned a DVD... everything works now.

I love Apple.
