My old HP 4600 just died while trying to do a scan. Cannot resurrect it,
guess it's toast. It was a cheapie anyway.

I do not scan every day, just occasionally do a scan of a page or two. I
need something reliable and reasonably priced (translate: cheapest I can
find that's worth spending money on).

Any recommendations?

Whatever major brand is on sale should be fine if it supports your OS.
Unless you are doing professional desktop publishing, its a six of one,
half dozen of the other situation.

While their printers suck, I've been satisfied with my consumer-grade
Epson scanner. But I do use it fairly often. If you're scanning 1-2
pages per week, I might suggest aiming for something that won't take up
a lot of space. That would mean either a multi-function device - viable
if you're also thinking about a new printer - or a smaller model. My
mother has an older model Canon LiDE that's serving well. Here's their
current low-end:

This model lists for $50. It's very small and it's bus-powered, so you
can stow it in a file cabinet and pull it out for 5 minutes on the days
when you actually need to scan something, leaving your desk cleaner and
a spare USB port the rest of the time.

thanks. I saw that one on office depot, think I'll just hop down there
and get one!
