G4 Quicksilver 2002 PCI Ethernet

I have a G4 Quicksilver 2002 whose Ethernet port is dead (it was
plugged into a router that got fried by lightning).  I want to put a
PCI Ethernet card in it, but both of the cards I have tried so far do
nothing.  Doesn't even show in System Profiler that any PCI card is
plugged in.  The card's indicator lights do come on, so there is power
to the PCI.  I tried the cards in 2 of my 4 slots.

I've decided that Linksys/Network Everywhere is a bad choice, since
there seem to be no drivers anywhere that would help.

Should an unrecognized card show *something* in System Profiler, or is
it normal for it to show nothing?  It makes me worry that my PCI
controller may be fried too.

Has anybody found a NIC that works in this kind of computer?  Don't
really need anything more than 100 Mbps, but gigabit would be nice.  :)

I have used Macsense NICs and they have always just worked.

Have you tried using the card once it's plugged in? I mean for
networking?

Yes.  As I said, the indicator light's come on and show (electrical)
connection to the cable modem and that packets are coming to it.  I
assume this is the modem attempting to see what is on the wire.  But
nothing shows up under system Profiler, and nothing shows on Network
preferences Port Configuration tab, so I can't select it for use.

The cards I've tried, appear to use a Linksys proprietary chipset that
has no Mac driver available anywhere.  David mentioned the MacSense
cards, and their page shows those using the RTL8139 chipset.  My
research shows that's a good chipset for Mac.  Unfortunately, It's $35
+ shipping.  That's a lot to invest if I'm not sure my PCI slots are
even working.

I'm going to go today & see if my local PC store has a cheap NIC that
definitely has the RTL chipset.  That's the problem going to Walmart,
you can't actually see the card in the store.  :P  Little shops don't
mind opening the box, and are more likely to have a clue anyway.

I see the Sonnet Presto Gigabit Ethernet Card:

<http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/product_info.php?products_id=119>

It specificalle mentions that is is compatible with the PowerMac G4
Quicksilver 2002. Price £61.04 VAT included.

Well, from the MacOSX.com forum, I have a report that the DLink
DFE530TX+ can simply be plugged in and it works, no drivers or
anything.  A neighborhood store has these (in fact, it's the only NIC
they carry).  Trying it in all 4 of my PCI slots, nothing.  Nada.  Zip.

So, I believe now that my PCI slots died the same time as my ethernet
port.  I guess now I'm looking at $150+ for a new motherboard.  :(

I can't help but think that the "report" you read was
inaccurate.

I can state from experience that the DFE530TX+ does NOT work
under OS 9 without its own driver (from my use with one on a
PowerMac 9600, which was only retired a few days ago!).

I suggest you go to this page first:
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DFE%2D530TX%2B

Then read this FAQ:
http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1426&question=DFE-530TX+

There is another relevant piece of info here:
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DFE%2D530TX%2B#

... that seems to suggest the last driver for the 530TX+ was
version 3.4.6 released back in early 2006, that "added
suport for Mac OS 10.2.8". No mention of any further updates.

It's _possible_ that subsequent Mac OS updates rendered the
card unusable, but I have no direct experience as far as
that goes.

I'd check carefully before you spend money on a new
motherboard - one that STILL may not work with the card,
because the card no longer "works with the OS"....

Also, MAKE SURE the card you have is the "plus" version of
the DFE530 series. There is a "non-plus" version (literally,
DFE-530TX as distinguished from DFE-530TX+) that DOES NOT
WORK with the Mac at all. I found this out the hard way
years ago.

That's really a problem with WiFi cards, manufacturers change
chipsets and never say anything. As you say, it also happens
with regular network cards too.

As for network cards try one with an RTL8139 chipset. They are
cheap (around $10 U.S.) and are supported with external drivers
in Macos 8.5 to 9.1 and 10.0-10.2. They work with no driver in
10.3 onward and I think 9.2.

The drivers can be downloaded from "www.realtek.com.tw"
and some are in a binhexed sit file on the usually included
floppy.
