I have an old beige G3 that I put a USB card into some years back.  It
appears to be USB 1.0 and is slooooow.  Will my G3 support USB 2.0 and,
if so, what card/manufacturer does anyone recommend?  Same question with
firewire?

Depends on whether you can find a driver to support the card you pick
for the particular OS version you have. Off the top of my head, I
believe Apple has never supported USB 2 on pre-X versions of the OS.

FireWire cards should absolutely be available and work. I like Sonnet as
a vendor in general. Unfortunately I have to experience with these cards

... but I've had good luck with the products I have tried and
(importantly) their support infrastructure.
