Got a new G5 flat panel iMac at the office.  I find that the
transparent "globe" speakers that came with the lampshade iMacs do not
work.  The plug does not match up with the G5 iMac's speaker port.
Why???  And what would you recommend as a decent pair of speakers that
WILL fit???  (Apple or non-Apple)

JBL's Duet speakers are excellent and of about the same magnitude as the
old Mac-speakers, Creature Speakers a notch above. If you want to keep
your unique ProSpeakers, Griffin makes a Firewire adapter for them!

The iMac G5 has built in speakers with a 12 watt amplifier.  According
to Apple technical specs, the audio output plug is for headphones or
optical connection.  Any speakers that include a built in amplifier
should work fine.  Any amplifier that includes a TOSlink optical input
(you will need the right lead)  should also be fine for driving
non-powered speakers.

I couldn't find the specifications for the globe speakers, but suspect
they were pretty non-standard if they came with the iMac.  Probably a
built in amplifier powered from the iMac via their audio plug.  You
wouldn't want to plug any standard audio lead in if that is the case.
