Thanks. I upgraded and will see how things go.
I'm I wrong in guessing that the automatic Software Update does not
pay attention to XCode? I suppose I can understand why, but it
would be nice if Software Update notified you about new and
improved versions of the Developor Tools.

You're mostly wrong. They did put Xcode 1.1 on Software Update, but it was
a miniature version which only updated Xcode and Interface Builder (I
think) and didn't give you new versions of the auxiliary apps, nor updated
documentation, and it generally was not a good idea to use it. They've
never put another version up that way.
One good way to get notified of Xcode updates is to sign up for ADC News
when you get your free developer account. Then you'll get a weekly e-mail
with updates geared towards Mac developers. Along with notices of new
versions of Xcode, there's often other useful tidbits included. If you
don't like the idea of getting an e-mail every week, I don't know what
alternatives there are besides just checking connect.apple.com
periodically, unfortunately.
