Paul,
I'm no iMac expert but this sounds like a fly-back transformer problem
very common to the early iMacs.
I think it's reapirable. Done a Google search yet ?
Anyone else able to help out ?

Or motherboard battery? Does this problem affect iMacs like it did older Powermacs?

That's what I did this morning...
I knew the battery was dead
The Date/Time was always wrong after restart
But I'm slack so I put it off till it wouldn't start at all...
New battery and all is well

The Mac men have diagnosed a problem with the "Video Analogue Board: a
component on that board is faulty and causes the
start-up problems I experienced."
The cost to fix is roughly what I believe the computer is worth so I'm
fixing it. I dont want another computer in the house (even though the
kids would like it!). Thanks for all advice given.

Yeah, it's a shame most can't afford anything better than narrowband

Thanks Sonny, Graley and Steve,
I've tried start-ups holding down keys, trying to zap PRAM. I think the
iMac doesn't get far enough in its start-up cycle to acknowledge the
keys held down. I was thinking it might be a power supply problem so
your suggestion, Sonny, of the fly-babck transformer sounds fair.
I'm taking it to the Mac men to have a look at.

I guess you've tried the usual..start up with the bootable system CD
that came with the IMac ? Hold the C key down. Then run a disk utility
if it will start up from the CD.

The CD drawer might open if you hold either the eject or mouse button
down while it is trying to start. Dont know much about IMacs.
