Phil....

You can buy the new Pioneer DVD-R/RW +R/+RW drive for under $300 from a PC store, and it's fully recognized for burning by
Apple in OX X 10.3 (Panther).

e.g.
http://www.umart.com.au/phtml/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=20&&bid=3&sid=4533

for the one I bought.

or

http://www.umart.com.au/phtml/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=20&&bid=3&sid=4183

If you want the retail pack with all the unecessary PC junk

how do u know what the min system requirement is for these?

The min system requirement is to have an ATA/IDE connector - what else
would you need?

If you're going to author DVDs you would need a G4 to get reasonable
encoding times, but if you can put up with the wait, you don't HAVE to
have one.

My reply was directed to Phil, who was considering buying a 2nd-hand DVD burner for more
than the price for a new model.

If memory serves me, you don't have a Mac that has the grunt required for burning DVDs?

correct.

how much grunt does one need?

Well, the first G4 to come with a Superdrive was a 733Mhz single processor.

Use that as a guide :D
woodsie - 29 Oct 2003 08:59 GMT
correct.

ah right.

now why so much grunt just to burn a dvd?

I'd be surprised if that were necessary.  Where you'd need the
grunt would be if you're "authoring" DVD content, because then
you're doing MPEG-2 encodes.

I wouldn't expect merely burning a DVD from an image to require
any more compute power than burning a CD-R, though I haven't
tested that theory.

What other DVDs would he want to create? :)

You can copy dvds for backup purposes, with the appropriate software
You can make 4.4 gig data dvds, to back up files
Both of these operations are less demanding than encoding mpeg2

And all the other uses as a player/cd burner of course

True, but there wouldn't be much CPU left while burning a DVD-R on some
old 2nd-hand G4 :)

BTW, I see you still are trying to flog the A05 for more than the model that
supercedes it.
Andrew - 29 Oct 2003 09:32 GMT
ANY G4 will burn a DVD no problems, and all can be retrofitted with one.
The grunt is only needed to encode the MPEG2 from, say , a .dv file - but
then any g4 will do that if you leave it going overnight.  A good copy of
toast helps, and it supports buffer underrun prevention which is nice.

I have not tried a dvd burner with a G3, but suspect that would work too.

Cheers Andrew
