Printing to Windows network

I have the misfortune to work in an agressively Windows environment.

If I want to print with my iBook 700 OS.2.7 I simply print to my printer
but at work it's a different problem. The only printers available are on
Windows shares.

I can physically connect with a USB cable but that is such a major
hassle so I tend to create a PDF and print from the Windozer for the
really desperate jobs.

Can anyone point me at a tech note (or post) the method for accessing
these printers (most are HP's). The Windozers are running either Win98
or WinXP

You need to know the IP address (looks like 192.168.42.252) of the
printer(s) you want to use. The system administrator should know this or can
find out with a network tool (sorry I don't know enough about 'doze networks
to say which one).

Go to the Print Center
- click "Add"
- choose "IP Printing"
- Put in the printer address
- Choose the printer type (you can use generic drivers but the specific one
will give you access to all the paper trays etc).
- The printer will now appear in your printing menu

I've been using this to print to an HP 5000 series laser over a Windows
network. There is something flaky (I think with a print server on the
network) that makes the printer give an error sometimes. Restarting the
printer seems to fix it. I've also found I get fewer errors when I print
from a PDF.

Good luck!

To use email address, replace "AT" and "DOT" (you knew that, didn't you).

Thanks for the try David,

Unfortunately this is not an option. A shared printer does not have its
own IP address as it is physically attached to the Windozer and is
shared using the windows share (I don't know exactly how this works...
not really interested). Also it does NOT share the IP address of the
computer it is attached to.

So my question is still not answered

Damn! Here's a thought: can a Windows machine/network access a printer
that's shared by an OS X machine? Maybe you can connect a printer directly
to your machine and your colleagues can access it over their network. I've
never tried this so it's just a wild guess.

Another thought (with a better chance of success at a higher price): there
are some 'USB share' boxes around (I found one at
http://www.paw.com.au/items.asp?id=215107) to let you share a USB peripheral
between two computers. Can this work for you?

Fingers crossed...

In Panther Apple seems to have put in gimp-print and you can connect to smb
printer which can be a windows share printer.
