I'm trying to find a relatively (no pun intended) simple
freeware/shareware database, suitable to record, sort, print, etc a home
library, with details such as title, publisher, cost, comments.
I've looked at a few at Twocows, but nothing suited.
I'm using OS X (10.2.8).
Any suggestions?

Postgresql, open source free software. If OSX really is UNIX, then
Postgresql is yours for the download. Watch out for dependencies.
Maybe 'simple' might be an issue? But there's a good O'Reilly book
with a CD included.

It ain't sophistictaed but it does work.
If you're running OSX.2.8 you also got AppleWorks which has a reasonable
flat file type database module. This will do the sort of work you
describe easily.
It has the additional 'feature' being very easy to import into FileMaker
if you ever decide to spend serious money.

I'm running 10.2.8 and don't have AppleWorks. Where should I have got it?

All Macs shipped since whenever (OS 3?) had a version of AppleWorks or
ClarisWorks included as part of the software package.
You can actually buy it for about AUD140 inc little Johnny's bite
Check out http://www.apple.com.au/appleworks/

I thought AppleWorks is only provided to iBook and iMac lines. And
absent in the professional lines.

If it's not in your Dock, look in "Applications", if its not there try
running your install CD and look for it in the custom install, and
install it from there.

Wow, where did that database come from? I thought it was removed from
Appleworks.

Many thanks to all repliers.
Whytoi is right. No AppleWorks with my G4.
I've downloaded a dozen little dbs but nothing suits. (Yair, my wife
always says I'm too picky) (I tell her that's why I married her!)
I'm sure I've seen something on a MacAddict disk, but not for OS X.
I'll keep searching.
SQL keeps cropping up and I have no idea what it means. About time I
looked into that, I think, Nikki and Marty.

Structured Query Language. Do a google and you'll find tutorial stuff
out there. If you're into it, you can keep an eye open in:-
<alt.binaries.mac.applications>
also
<alt.binaries.e-book.technical>**
There's heaps of stuff to d/l there. If you don't see what you need,
you can always make a request.
Have fun
Nikki
** watch out with this one, plenty of what's posted is in CHM format
which is BlinDoze Only. But plenty of RARed PDFs.

What's wrong with the DB layer in AppleWorks? It's included with X and
unless you need relationships, it's fine for straight forward cardfile
stuff.

A home library of books?
Do you want something that's already set up to catalogue books, or do
you want to fiddle with SQL? If the later, hsql (on sourceforge) is a
good, simple, Java-based database which runs fine on MacOS X.
Cheers, Robert.

How many books do you have? If it's less than 30,000 (and will never
go beyond) why not use the spreadhseet in OpenOffice and export text
files to Writer for printing.
It's available for OSX isn't it?

If you like, I'll e-mail you FileMaker Pro 2.0 (507K StuffIt file).
Classic App, I know it runs on OS8.1. Should run under OSX?
It's flat file (which is all you need for home library) but IMHO it's more
advanced than the database built-in to AppleWorks. Definitely more
advanced than the database built-in to ClarisWorks 5.

Wouldn't that be illegal?

I guess it would depend on whether "didi" actually still uses that SN
or not. If it's a spare SN, then there's no reason why he can't give
out that software as a present.
Also, what's the legal right over a software once its support has been
stopped? Or worse, when the company has disappeared?
