No flames please. I can switch it on and prepare reports and print them
out but I know diddely squat re software conflicts etc.

I suspect I have a problem, because my iMac G3 seems to have slowed down
a hell of a lot,  and  I get cut off a hell of a lot when online (much
more often that six months or so ago).

Is there something I can do to check out my system or whatever i need to
check to see if everything is running as it should be? How can I find
out if there is conflicting software?

Hi,
What OS are you running and what on earth is Macsoup?
Have you checked for virii?
Have u defragged lately, have you installed any background apps like
SETI@home or similar? Have any of your memory setting changed in control
panel, like has virtual memory changed or gone or a ram drive swallowed up
more than it should ?(all these questions assuming u aren't running OSeX)
With disconnections, they can be due to a number of factors (have you moved
or changed telcos or ISPs, enabled call waiting ? Do you hear hiss on the
line? Pick up the phone and dial one digit to get rid of dialtone and listen
for hiss or crackle or both or crossed lines, ie faint voices)
Is the modem internal or external and what flavour if external?
look at www.modemhelp.net for scripts to help with disconnections.
Check all things are connected firmly and no corrosion at connections or
signs of damage on cables.
If its free, call your ISP for tech support on D/C, but check what might be
slowing the Mac down in general first, they might be related, particularly
with internal modems that rely on software heavily (some do some don't, not
sure with apple internal modems, hopefully someone else might know a bit
about em.
Hope some of this gives you ideas on a plan of attack to get things
happening again.

9.2,  with 576 megabite memory

>and what on earth is Macsoup?

MacSoup is a Mac newsreader I installed deliberately many years ago
specifically because it didn't allow my then young, enquiring son to
open attachments!! Very simple to use so I've carriued on with it. I
only use OE if I know I am being sent attachments by someone I know, or
need to send attachments myself.

Yes

Nope. Don't know how to,  or why.

Ahhh! My son was home some months back and installed SETI. I've no idea
why. How do I uninstall it? Just biff the application and associated
prefs into the bin?

Virtual memory and RAM are both off.

Can't see any probs there.

Internal.

Thanks for your response Tim.

Hi,
Defgamenting speeds up disk access to a certain extent by putting files
contiguously on the disk instead of chunks here and there so the disk has to
search for bits and pieces across the drive (its a bit like having a filing
cabinet full of documents in no particular order) Some people might dispute
the value of defragmenting your disk, but it works for me!! (older Mac OS's
had an inbuilt fast defrag utility, but 9.2 doesnt seem to have a built in
facility so its a 3rd party app like Norton or others) some ppl don't like
Nortons but I think its mainly OSX users that have problems, it works fine
on my 9.22 PM7600/200, besides defrag it has other goodies so have a look
next visit to a software shop, or go to the Symantec website (not sure but
probably www.symantec.com (.au as well, maybe )
Even though you have a large chunk of ram it might be worthwhile enabling
virtual memory.
And with SETI, it usually only comes on when your computer is idle and acts
as a screen saver, unless you activate it yourself manually, check the
options in SETI and maybe change the length of time before activating and
the time it goes to a blank screen, then check energy saving options in
Control panel for any conflicts in time (set energy saver to turn off screen
after SETI goes to blank screen. You can also disable SETI by right clicking
on the Icon next to the clock and choose preferences, then untick enable
screensaver there or as I said before make the startup times longer.
I will checkout the removal process of SETI and get back to you, but I think
it has a Control panel item plus an extension I think, plus a folder in the
User Information Folder in the System Folder,
When SETI runs as a foreground app it seems to use 20MB RAM but no idea what
it uses when a screensaver
Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your time.

Got a new message on the screen this morning at startup. Said something
about a system failure, showed a little bomb and I had to restart
because it was frozen. Restarted ok!!!! So I have a conflict somewhere.
I will junk SETI after you get back to me.

Cheers

You should always write down any on scren messages you get they can be
very helpful in diagnosing the problem.Actually that's what they're
there for.
Sounds like it may be a good idea to start up your computer from your
Norton Start up CD while holding down the "c"key.
Run Nortons and permit it to do any necessary repairs(I think you denied
it permision last time you ran it?)See how that goes.
Failing that Re-Install your System Software.

Don't take this as a flame or an insult, but what may be helpful to you
is to buy yourself a copy of "iMac for Dummies"
It will give you an easy to read run down about exrensions, control
panels and your system folder which may come in handy,it also has a
trouble shooting section.
You can get far more involved books but for a simple description as to
how your machine works and what to do when it doesn't these type of
books can be very helpful.
