Aperture problem

I am currently considering using Aperture as my main photo application.
One problem in my initial testing is that that when I try and open some
photos into the large size by clicking on the little pics along the
bottom (the previews I think) they only display in the main screen for a
second or so then a message comes up saying these are "unsupported image
format" and a blank screen is there

strange hey?  Note that the pics that will not display in large size are
pics taken by the same camera and with the same settings as pics that
work just fine - in some cases the pics were taken just a minute or so
apart and are of the same subject.

Why this discrimination for no obvious (to me) reason?

cheers and thanks in advance

am presuming they are jpegs, yes? What resolution would they be? On
average?  And what system are you running? I get the feel that if these
are very large images, you may be making it too hard for the memory to
cope.  But this is just hunting around at the moment.
